Stream Restoration Project

Phoenix Elementary School sits on approximately 12.5 acres on Drake Rd.  The property is a mix of environments: a developed environment, a park, a monoculture alder forest, and a healthy mature forest.  Through all of these areas on the property runs a seasonal creek.

Our intention is to restore the creek in the area on the immediate school property from what is now, an unusable space overgrown with invasive plant species, to a multifunctional space teeming with native plant species.

One of the first steps towards the Stream Restoration Project is the development of a native plant nursery at Phoenix School.  We have asked our Phoenix families for help.  Attached please find a letter from our principal Mr. Sparanese: plant propagation letter and its spreadsheet.

THANK YOU TO THE SALT SPRING ISLAND FOUNDATION!!!!

Our school has received a $1000 grant from the Salt Spring Island Foundation for our Phoenix Elementary Creek Restoration and Demonstration Forest Project.  This money will allow us to buy tools and equipment to assist in the development of nature trails and a garden with native plants on our school grounds.  This grant was made possible in part thanks to the Jacqueline Booth Memorial Fund for environmental education – through the Salt Spring Island Foundation – that was initiated by Jacqueline’s family to honour her life and to ensure that her community work in the area of environmental conservation and education would continue on Salt Spring Island. Thank you so much!!
