ARTIST IN THE CLASS
Supported by Saltspring Arts Council : to give the arts a stronger presence in the everyday life of students by bringing the artists of Salt Spring Island to class to share their skills; and to create an awareness of the arts in our community. We are very lucky to have had wonderful artists:
Lisa Lipsett, Wendi Gilson, Maureen Proctor, Robbyn Scott and Johanna Hoskins.
EXPLORATIONS
Explorations are an opportunity for community members and family members to create and facilitate learning opportunities for the students of Phoenix School, and the students in our Learning Design Partners (LDP) Program.
Last year’s Exploration:Photography
The students took photos of a subject that changes over time as a way to capture the essence of transformation.
Last year, our school wide theme was called Photosynthesis. The theme was based on the scientific concept of growth, transformation and nature. This photography exploration was a great vehicle to explore this concept. Students learned more about how to:
1. Operate a camera,
2. Choose photographic subjects,
3. Take good quality photos,
4. Observe things as they change and be able to describe in qualitative
and quantitative ways how it’s changing, and
5. Put together a display of their images and to present it to
parents and peers.
