Phoenix Elementary School
Phoenix is a public school, part of the School District 64 (Gulf Islands). “Technically classified as an alternative school, Phoenix serves children from Kindergarten to Grade 8 in a renovated house on a large acreage. The program is delivered with a slightly different spin, but still comes from within the public school system. The B.C. curriculum is adhered to and attendance is mandatory”.
Even though our name is “Phoenix Elementary School”, we have two multi-age classes: a Primary class (Kindergarten to Grade 3) and an Intermediate class (Grade 3 to 8). The school currently has 48 students in two classes: 19 in the primary class (kindergarten to Grade 3) and 29 in the intermediate group (grades 3 to 8)”. “If a small, homey environment where learning is accomplished in every corner of the school through a variety of activities sounds good to you, the Phoenix School might be the place for your family”.
“Being situated on 15 acres directly across the road from Mouat Park is another attraction for parents and kids who value outside time. The school walks over to Salt Spring elementary for gym class and makes use of its own grounds for play time”. For more information, please read the following article about our school: Driftwood article.
Phoenix is classified as an alternative school because we are a K-8 school and because of our multi-age classes. Also, the definition of Alternative Education includes “home-based learning“. Since Phoenix operates as an alternative school, it draws K-8 students from across Salt Spring Island. No catchment area boundaries are defined for our School.

THE HISTORY OF PHOENIX -By our student Casi Little
The story starts off in the late 1980′s when a group of loving parents started discussing the possibility of making a small, but very educational school, to support their children. At the time, the parents were just home-schooling their kids. In the spring of 1990, this group met with the Superintendent at the time, Michael Marshall, to discuss how and where this school could be built. He was happy and supportive about the parent’s ideas and he said: “This must be done!”. Our school’s founding father is Frank Coffey. Phoenix School started in 1991 and that starting year there were 24 students in Grade 2 to Grade

We believe that all students possess natural intelligence and curiosity as well as a desire to belong to a harmonious community. Learning should be a process of discovery that will enhance the child’s physical, artistic, social, and emotional growth. Students will learn to be a member of the community at large, develop a well-rounded outlook of the world, nature, environment and understand their roles and responsibilities within them. All students can and should work towards meeting their potential with the help of the school community.
